On April 30, 2018, the California Supreme Court issued a landmark decision that will impact the ability of appraisal firms and appraisal management companies (AMCs) to treat appraisers as independent contractors.  The case is called Dynamex v. Superior Court. I wrote an article about the issue that is publicly available on LinkedIn at:

Appraisers in Arbitration Published by the Appraisal Institute (April 2018)

Many of my clients are involved in real estate valuation, whether they are legal clients or insurance customers of LIA's E&O program. One future area of growth that I see for appraisers is arbitration. My friend Paula Konikoff, JD, MAI, AI-GRS, is a highly talented appraiser-arbitrator (and also one of the most sought after appraiser expert witnesses in the US). She has written a new book for the Appraisal Institute entitled Appraisers in Arbitration. The book helps appraisers with arbitration work.  I was lucky to be invited to write a chapter on liability issues for Paula's book. The point of my chapter is to help appraisers feel more comfortable risk-wise in the less familiar arbitrator role. Here is a link to the book:
